Speak and Understand Ancient Mayan In Three Easy Steps!

NOVA has made it easy to speak Mayan and know what you are saying. The photo above is a detail from one of the lovely stelae at Piedras Negras in Guatemala. The ruins of Piedras Negras are notable for the fact that scholars can read artists' signatures on the wonderful works; the artists are identifiable as individuals. It is also notable because Tatiana Proskouriakoff, the famous Mayanist who died in 1985, is buried there.
What NOVA has done is take one stela, Stela 3, and decipher it for us on their website with interactive graphics. Follow that link and you will see what I mean. Turn on your volume. As you push "begin" to read each set of graphic glyphs, you can hear how to say the words and read what it all means. (Thanks to the guys at the blog called Talking Pyramids of Egypt for pointing out this cool NOVA site.)
